Grade: 3 – moderate. No formed trails, uneven surfaces and slopes
Steve will lead the excursion to the Birri Birri Burial Stone Aboriginal Site in the Turon State Forest. The significance of the site will be discussed, and time will be spent locating and looking at the known stone mounds. This is an area of heath with the ground covered in lichen and mosses. There may be orchids flowering.
The next stop will be the cliffs above Clear Creek which is a scenic area with interesting geology, plants and panoramic views of Winburndale Nature Reserve and lands back towards Bathurst. Field Nats visited these sites in June 2023 on a very cold day and at the time thought we needed to come back later one year.
4WD’s are essential and we will need to car pool. The trail has damaged areas of pooled water, but passage is generally good.
Meet at the bus bay at 9am sharp to carpool. We will drive to Bathurst, have a toilet stop at Hector Park at the entry to Bathurst and then meet Steve near the hocky fields just after the bridge over the Macquarie River. Come prepared for a full day excursion. Bring morning tea, lunch, water, and any essential medications you may need. Please wear closed walking shoes and suitable clothing.
