2026-11-15 – Sunday 15th November – Wambool Nature Reserve

Where: Wambool Nature Reserve

When: Sunday 15 November, Time: 9.00 am

Leader: Hai Wu

Grade: 3 – moderate. Some formed trails with uneven surfaces and moderate slopes as well as off-trail walking over uneven surfaces.

Meeting place: Orange High School Bus Bay.

This excursion will be to Wambool Nature Reserve to look for unusual orchids. Wambool is known as an orchid hotspot. It is 30 minutes east of Bathurst and then south on Timber Ridge Road.

Hai Wu will lead the excursion as he found both species of Flying Duck Orchid there last year. They have tiny flowers so it will be good to be taken to where they have been found.

At the second gate to the reserve, we will park and walk upslope to the Geebung Trail. We’ll walk south along this trail to where Hai found the Flying Duck Orchids. After a break, we’ll head north back up the slope and along the Yetholme Trig Trail and have lunch at the trig. Hai has found a cluster of Black Tongue Caladenia in this area.

Most of the walk will be on the uneven trails in the reserve although some walking will be off track through the understorey shrubs.

Meet at the Orange High School bus bay at 9am sharp to carpool. We’ll make a toilet stop in Bathurst. Come prepared for a full day excursion. Bring morning tea, lunch, water, and any essential medications you may need. Please wear closed walking shoes and suitable clothing.
